Preparations Tips for a Winter Freeze

January 22, 2026

  • Before the freezing weather arrives, consider the following preventative measures:
  • Insulate/Wrap all exterior piping/fixtures.
  • Cover vents/open spaces near home foundation.
  • Locate & know where your exterior shut off valve is.
  • Please make sure irrigation systems are off; disconnect water hoses from faucets, etc.
  • Turn off water at any vacant/unattended properties (camps) in case of leaks or piping failure due to freezing.
  • In the event of water loss, consider filling the bathtub for use as needed, such as flushing toilets.
  • When the weather arrives, these steps can be taken to further prevent pipes from freezing:
  • If you must drip water, it needs to be a small drip (not a stream).Once temperature are above freezing, please stop dripping.
  • Keep the interior cabinets that contain piping open to allow heat to circulate.
  • If you suspect your pipes have frozen, please consider the following:
  • Turn off the main shut off valve until your temperatures have risen.
  • Please be aware that frozen pipes may have broken or cracked and leaks may be present once pipes are thawed and services are restored.
  • Try to conserve as much water as possible to avoid low pressure:
  • Taking short showers
  • Turn Off the Tap While Brushing Your Teeth
  • Avoid washing clothes as much as possible during freezing temperatures.

  • Please Conserve Water Throughout The Duration Of The Freezing Weather Event.
